WHAT IS SERIOUS EVENT REPORTING?

The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry requires all employers, including the University of Virginia, to report any work related incident resulting in a fatality or catastrophe.

Environmental Health & Safety reports work-related incidents to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry in a manner which ensures compliance with Virginia Code § 40.1-51.1.

Work-related incidents which MUST be reported include:

  • fatality
  • inpatient hospitalization of one or more persons
  • amputation
  • loss of an eye
  • medical events i.e. heart attacks

If you learn about any of the above work-related incidents report it immediately!

BACKGROUND

Code of Virginia § 40.1-51.1. Duties of employers.

Virginia Code § 40.1-51.1.D

D. Every employer shall report to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry within eight hours any work-related incident resulting in a fatality or within 24 hours any work-related incident resulting in (i) the inpatient hospitalization of one or more persons, (ii) an amputation, or (iii) the loss of an eye, as prescribed in the rules and regulations of the Safety and Health Codes Board.
