Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly
When chemicals must be used, apply pesticides and fertilizers according to the manufacturer’s instructions and educate yourself on the potential receptors in the area where you will be applying.
Do not apply chemicals when it is raining or expected to rain
Pesticides can only be applied by a licensed chemical applicator. OEHS maintains a database of those individuals.
Sweep and collect debris from sidewalks and other paved areas rather than washing it into our waterways
Compost or recycle landscaping waste when possible
Maintain landscaped areas to prevent soil erosion
Use native plants that require low maintenance to landscape
Cover bare spots in grassy areas to prevent erosion
Don’t over water landscaping
Do not leave grass clippings on the streets, sidewalks, or other impervious surfaces. Sweep or blow them back onto grassy areas or collect for composting.
Cover piles of mulch or dirt being used in landscaping projects to prevent erosion during storm events
Plants along roadways and sidewalks are especially important to stormwater management because they help to filter out pollutants from runoff. Make sure these plants are healthy and well maintained.
Never dump any chemical into storm water drain. If you are unsure of how to properly dispose of a chemical, contact OEHS at 982-4911 for assistance.
Make sure you have received annual training on storm water pollution prevention. If you have not received proper training, contact your supervisor
Ensure all paint is properly disposed of by calling OEHS at 982-4911. Never dump excess paint down storm sewer drains.
Only wash equipment or containers at an OEHS designated location. Facilities Management, Scott Stadium and U-Hall are all equipped with equipment washing facilities that drain to the sanitary sewer. Never wash equipment or containers in parking lots or paved areas that drain to stormwater conveyances.
