Occupational Safety Program

Fall Protection - Federal Law requires UVA Managers and Supervisors to protect faculty, staff and students from the risks of falls when they are assigned to work at elevated heights. Departments must assess work locations and work activities to identify existing or potential fall hazards.

Lock-Out Tag-Out - Federal Law requires UVA Mangers and Supervisors to protect employees from injuries due to accidental energizing, start-up or release of stored energy from equipment and/or systems. Departments must establish and document Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures. Departments must also initially train and qualify persons who will perform these duties.

Personal Protective Equipment - Federal Law requires UVA Managers and Supervisors to provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to their employees. This equipment must provide protection from workplace hazards that cannot be adequately controlled. Basic PPE is available to protect the head, eyes, face, hands and feet.

Powered Industrial Trucks - Federal Law requires that anyone who operates a Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) must be trained and certified. Employees must be certified on the particular piece of equipment that they will operate while completing duties here at UVA. All PIT operators must first complete a certification class and then must attend annual re-certification classes.

Respiratory Protection - Federal Law requires employee protection from airborne hazards (like chemicals, dust or fibers) through engineering controls. If an Airborne Hazard Assessment determines engineering controls are not feasible then respirators may be required. The correct respirator for the particular airborne contaminant(s) must be selected.
